You may be tempted to skip this step because you can easily get the account’s balance from the bank’s online portal. This step is important because you will discover innocuous mistakes like duplicate checks, transposed numbers (901 instead of 109), and missing deposits. These mistakes will cause your reports to be wrong.

Wineries are more challenging than other businesses primarily because the revenue comes through the POS program or shopping card, and the funds show up as automatic deposits from your credit card processor. These deposits often have refunds and merchant fees deducted from them However, because we only work with wineries, we have many tips to help the wineries master this process.

We know that many folks follow this procedure. However, we believe that if you do this, you are missing out on many critical pieces of information. In this procedure, folks record the deposits as “income”. That amount is a combination of wine sales, merchandise sales, tasting fees, shipping income, sales tax collected, and merchant fees charged by the credit card processor. Each of those bits of information sheds light on the health of the business, and they give you clues that help you make better business decisions.
