Wearing many hats as a small business owner

I ran our family restaurant for 10 years, starting at the tail-end of the 70’s. We were the first restaurant in LA to offer more than the house wine by the glass. We offered over a dozen wines by the glass! In between keeping up with the hospitality industry's relentless rhythm, maintaining a fabulous wine list, and hosting Dinner with the Winemaker events, I had to reluctantly keep the books.

Maui’s Quickbook Pro Advisor

After I left this restaurant industry and moved to Maui, my bookkeeping skills ended up serving me well. I discovered QuickBooks when I was keeping track of financials for my husband’s contracting business, and I became a QuickBooks ProAdvisor when I began consulting with many different businesses on Maui. I discovered that I really loved helping small businesses gain clarity and understand their financials.

Moving to wine country

We returned to the Mainland in search of better food and better schools, and I decided that if I wasn’t going to live in paradise, I would get into the wine industry. We moved to Sonoma County and I began working for a winery that was using QuickBooks. That’s when I discovered how complicated costing was, and started to take as many courses as I could to further specialize.

The gap in financial resources for small wineries

In 2013 Sonoma State Wine Business Institute recognized the need to create a winery business certificate, and I was invited to be part of the team that created the program. The first course that I taught, so many people attended that I had only standing room for 3 classes in a row. Seventy-five people attended each class! This absolutely proved that there was a need to bridge the gap between common accounting practices and the complexities of the winery business.

Launching QB Winery Solutions

I wanted to serve the needs of small wineries outside of Sonoma County, so I shifted away from giving live courses and developed new courses and services offered in a fully online format. We are the only Quickbook specialists and online learning program that only services small to medium wineries.

Helping small wineries reach profitability

Winery owners and managers need to know how to organize their QuickBooks, calculate True Cost, read their financials, and to be strategic about their business. The industry's seasonality also needs to be accounted for, which is why we give our Silver Club members support around the year.
